Motorcycle crash kills ex-trooper
Times-News

A former North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was killed in a motorcycle wreck late Saturday afternoon.

Robert L. Whitesell  Jr., a 55-yearold resident of Apex, was killed after running off the road on N.C. 87 in southern Alamance County near Mount Olive Church Road.
Sgt. N.D. Satterfield of the local Highway Patrol office said Whitesell  was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle near the Alamance-Chatham county line.
He said the wreck happened at about 5:45 p.m. when Whitesell  ran off the right side of the road, returned to the road, ran off the left side and struck a concrete mailbox post.
Whitesell  died at the scene.

Satterfield said there was no speed, alcohol or reckless driving involved. He said witnesses to the accident, including other motorists and people who were outside in their yard, said they saw Whitesell’s  head slump before his motorcycle left the road. While there is no way of knowing for sure, that may have been related to a medical problem, Satterfield said. Satterfield said Whitesell  had been a state trooper "at some point" and had resigned.
