Mabel Tapscott Foster dies at 101


    BURLINGTON — Mrs. Mabel Tapscott Foster, 101, formerly of Tarleton Avenue, Burlington and presently resided in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., died at Broward Health, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
    A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Warren A. Foster and the daughter of John Henry Tapscott and Effie Catherine King Tapscott, both deceased. She was a retired teacher and substitute teacher for the Burlington and Alamance County School Systems. She was also a volunteer at Alamance Regional Medical Center. Mabel was a former member of the American Business Women’s Association where she was voted Woman of the Year in 1987. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church and a former secretary and treasurer of the Fannie Larkin Sunday School Class.
    Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Foster Chamberlain of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; her son, Henry Warren Foster and wife Mary Alice of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Catherine (Oscar) Rosario of South Carolina, Rebecca Lalonde of Florida, Mary Amanda Foster of Charlotte and Henry Warren Foster Jr. and wife Danielle of Texas; two great-grandchildren, Justin Lalonde of Florida and Cole Foster of Texas; two half sisters, Hazel Tapscott and Claudia Jones, both of Burlington; and a half brother, W. H. “Bill” (Barbara) Tapscott of Burlington; several nieces and nephews including one very special niece, Sarah Malcolm of Matthews, N.C.; and two very special friends, Marie Ray and Virginia Rose, both of Burlington.
    The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Marshall Old with the family receiving friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Union Ridge Church cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Front Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2597, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2597.
