David Luther McCollum, 73, surrounded by his family, passed away on May 22, 2025 at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, NC following a brief battle with cancer. He was born March 18, 1952 in Greensboro, NC, the son of Harvey Lee McCollum, Sr. and Nettie Paisley McCollum.
Mr. McCollum's funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 30th at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 5120 Burlington Road, Greensboro, NC 27405. A reception will follow the service in the CEC at the church.
David graduated from Northeast Guilford High School in 1970. Following graduation he attended Guilford Technical Institute and earned an Associates Degree in Architectural Drafting in 1972. David was a master carpenter and founded McCollum Construction, Inc. in 1987. He worked on commercial projects but focused mainly on residential renovations and additions. Most noticeably, he designed and built the residence he shared with his wife and family for 45 years. David ran this successful company for 36 years.
David was married to Wanda Jobe McCollum for 52 years. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. David loved spending time with his family on the lake and had a passion for classic cars.
Mr. McCollum is preceded in death by his son Jonathan David McCollum and parents Harvey Lee McCollum Sr. and Nettie Paisley McCollum. David is survived by his wife Wanda Jobe McCollum, daughters Lorie McCollum Williams and husband Paul (Indian Trail, NC), and Annie McCollum Smith and husband Chad (Gibsonville, NC), and his grandchildren Piper and Bodie Williams and Nettie Smith whom affectionately referred to him as Poppa. David is also survived by his siblings Jean Hurt (Birmingham, AL), Harvey Lee McCollum Jr. (McLeansville, NC), Faye Robinson and husband Dave (Winston Salem, NC), and Paul McCollum and wife Jean (Oak Ridge, NC) and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church or BDSRA, Batten Disease Support and Research Association www.bdsrafoundation.org.
