Mrs. Gertrude Gilliam Cahoon

WINSTON-SALEM — Mrs. Gertrude Gilliam Cahoon, 95, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Mrs. Cahoon was born Oct. 2, 1908 to the late Charles Lee and Esther Somers Gilliam of Alamance County, N.C. Gertrude was a retired elementary teacher with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. She was a past Regent of the Old North State Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and past president of the Winston-Salem Woman’s Club and the Hoe N’Hope Garden Club. Her volunteer work included being a Girl Scout leader and working in the Forsyth Memorial Hospital gift shop and at the Oxford Antique Shop. Gertrude’s hobbies were playing bridge, bowling, needlework, and caring for her flower garden. She was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her loving nephews, Mitchell L. Clark of Greensboro, Jim. C. Gilliam of Kissimmee, Fla., and Wallace T. Gilliam of Pensacola, Fla.; her nieces, Nanette Gilliam of Graham, N.C. and Rachel Kuster of Mims, Fla.; and her nephew’s widow, Peggy Clark of Woodruff, S.C.; as well as great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Cahoon Jr.; sister, Mozelle G. Clark; and brothers, Fletcher and Clyde Gilliam.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with interment to follow at Gilliam’s Primitive Baptist Church in Alamance County, N.C. at 12 noon.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 this evening at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, 2951 Reynolda Road, in Winston-Salem.
