Dr. James Philip Westmoreland
PITTSBORO — Dr. James Philip Westmoreland, M.D., 75, who resided
with his daughter, Ginny McPherson for the last 6 * years, died Friday,
January 4, 2002. A native of Gibsonville, he was the son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. John Ashley and Onie Mae Somers Westmoreland. Dr.
Westmoreland was a graduate of Gibsonville High School, Elon
College, UNC School of Medicine, and the University of Pennsylvania
School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years as a
medical officer. Dr. Westmoreland practiced at the VA Hospital in
Richmond, Va., Crawford-Long Hospital in Atlanta, and Norfolk
General Hospital in Norfolk, Va. Dr. Westmoreland later practiced in
Pittsboro, where he served for over 25 years as an internal medicine
practicioner and medical examiner. “Doc” was an avid pilot and
motorcycle enthusiast. His brothers, Dr. Joseph H. and Dr. John S.
Westmoreland, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 12 p.m. in the Griffin Funeral
Service Chapel with interment following in Shallow Ford United Church
of Christ Cemetery, Elon.
Dr. Westmoreland is survived by three daughters, Ginny McPherson
and her husband Morris of Elon, Anne Gouldman of Pittsboro, and
Sarah Joannou and her husband Anthony of Currituck; sisters, Onie
Mae Dennis of Caswell Beach and Sarah Burgess of Bath;
grandchildren, Philip Howard, Christman McPherson, Holly
McPherson, Morgan Nunn, Christina Joannou, and Nicole Joannou.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 at Griffin
Funeral Service & Cremation, Pittsboro.

Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill., 60611,
are welcome.
