SOMERS, LTC. (Retired) JOSEPH CLEMENTH, died 3 Sept 2012 after a lengthy illness. Joe Somers, age 88, was born Dec 9, 1923 in Elon College, North Carolina to Mr. Ernest G. Somers and Mrs. Lecy Wagoner Somers. He attended college at North Carolina State, but due to WWII he was called to active duty in the Army-Air Force in 1942. He attended Cadet Training in Montgomery, Alabama, where he met and married Juanita (Nita) Jones just before he was sent overseas. Joe flew the B-24 bomber during WWII and flew bombing missions over Germany and France while stationed at Old Buckingham Air Base, England. After V-E day he returned to the States for training on cargo aircraft as the war shifted to the Pacific. After V-J day Joe was discharged and returned to Montgomery, AL. However, as a Reservist he participated in the Berlin Airlift, and then returned to active duty when the Korean War began. He also flew missions in support of the building of the DEW Line (Defense Early Warning), flights to resupply the Antarctic bases, missions into Vietnam and then served as a test pilot on several different aircraft. Joe served 27 Years in the Air Force and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1969. He returned to Montgomery and eventually opened Jones-Somers Auto Parts. Joe was a 32nd degree Mason and very involved in his church, serving as a Deacon at both Highland Avenue Baptist Church and Ridgecrest Baptist Church. A sincere love and dedication to his family was evident in Joe’s life. Funeral arrangements are being made through Southern Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. of Montgomery. Viewing will be between 5-7 PM Wednesday, Sept 5th, with funeral services at 11 AM Thursday, Sept 6 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Richard Somers (killed during WWII), Boyd Somers and Calvin Somers and sisters Virginia Somers Jones and Betty Somers McIntyre. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Nita Jones Somers. Joe is also survived by two brothers, John D. Somers of NC and Daniel E. Somers (Sabre) of NC and one sister Gladys Somers Lancaster of VA, and is also survived by his children Daniel J. Somers (Susan), Diane Somers Mosely (Larry) and Brenda Somers Johnson (Gary). His 9 Grandchildren include Melissa Somers Kienzle (Lance), Nathan Somers, Jennifer Mosley Quist (Greg), Keith Mosley (Jessica), Somer Johnson, Aaron Johnson (Megan), Joshua Johnson, Kim Patrick Dojonovic (Mike), and Teri Patrick Hicks (Scott) and 9 Great-Grandchildren. 532, Joseph C.     The funeral for Joseph C. Somers was held in Montgomery, Ala. Sept. 6, 2012.
    He was born Dec. 9, 1923 to Mr. Ernest G. Somers and Mrs. Lecy Wagoner Somers. After graduating from A-O High School in 1941, he entered N.C. State College, then Cadet Training at Maxwell Air Force base in Montgomery, Ala. where he met his wife, Juanita (Nita) Jones. Joe flew the B-24 bomber during World War II and flew bombing missions over Germany and France while stationed at “Old Buckingham Air Base, England.” Joe served 27 years in the Air Force and retired in 1969. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was involved in his church.
    Survivors include his wife, one son and two daughters; two brothers John (Ramona) and Daniel E. (Sabra) of Burlington; a sister, Gladys Somers Lancaster of Virginia Beach, Va.
    He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Boyd, and Calvin; two sisters, Virginia Somers Jones and Betty Somers McIntyre. He is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews in the area.
