BROWNS SUMMIT – Ada Cook Calhoun, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 surrounded by her family and friends.
A native of Guilford County, she was born September 9, 1936 to the late John Edward and Vera Huffines Cook and was the wife of 61 years to Robert Leo Calhoun of the home.
Ada worked for 39 years at Lorillard Tobacco Company before retiring. She was a lifelong member of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church and the Helping Hands Sunday School Class. She was a diehard Duke Basketball fan and enjoyed farming, gardening and baking for neighbors and shut-ins.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Leo Calhoun; sons, Johnny Calhoun and wife Cindy, Dennis Calhoun and wife Heather; grandson, Dustin Calhoun; two step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, AJ and Charlie Cook and sisters, Ruby Busick and Annie Jones.
A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Apple’s Chapel Christian Church by Rev. Dave Johnson and Rev. Larry Gray with the burial to follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the church and other times at the home.
The family would like to thank the Chaplin and the staff of Amedisys Hospice Care of Burlington for their in-home care as well as her in-home caregiver, Trish Barker.
The family was blessed to have the support of the community, the church, friends and loved ones during her lengthy struggle with dementia.
