CARR ELIJAH GERRINGER, JR.
Carr Elijah Gerringer Jr., 88, of Newport News, passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, May 17, 2013. He passed peacefully in his sleep in his home at the Chesapeake where he had resided for the past 9 years, accompanied until the very end by his loving and devoted wife, Marie.
Carr, also known as Junior among the Gerringer boys, was born on August 23, 1924 in Elon, N.C., the 4th son of Rev. Carr E. Gerringer and Lacey Gerringer. The Gerringer boys moved to the Peninsula in the 1940’s, and Carr’s father and namesake took stewardship of the flock at Liberty Baptist Church for many years. Carr graduated from Grimsley HS in Greensboro N.C. and served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Carr attended N. C. State University, from where he graduated in 1951 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, in addition to playing on the Golf team. Carr remained a loyal follower of the Wolfpack for the remainder of his life. In December of 1951, he accomplished what he believed to be his greatest achievement, when he took Mary Marie Edwards as his wife.
After a brief time with DuPont, Carr began working for Turner Construction Co. of NYC, and he remained with Turner for over 40 years until his retirement. Turner took him all over the U.S., including New York, Chicago, and Houston. When he retired from Turner, he was able to devote his full attention to his lifelong passion, GOLF! Carr was an exceptional golfer, with an especially magnificent short game. After Carr retired, he and Marie returned to the Peninsula, where he joined James River Country Club. Carr collected a Senior Championship, 9 (!) Super Senior Championships, and over the course of his golfing career, 8 holes-in-one! Carr would tell anyone who listened, that it was not the accolades on the golf course he enjoyed the most, it was the camaraderie of his friends at JRCC, of which there were many. Carr shot his age so many times, a Daily Press article was devoted to it, back when Carr was a mere 80. Carr especially enjoyed playing golf with his brothers, and his son, who he thrashed on a regular basis.
Carr is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Marie Gerringer; his children Robert Carr Gerringer of Houston, TX and wife Cynthia, and (Nancy) Leigh Harris of Charlotte, N.C. and husband Ken; his beloved grandchildren Joseph, Jessica and Lacey; his sisters-in-law Ruth Gerringer of Newport News, Nell Gerringer of Hampton, and Alvertie Edwards of Newport News; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Carr is predeceased by his father, the Reverend Carr E. Gerringer; his mother Lacey Gerringer; his brothers Raymond Gerringer, Hugh Gerringer, A. Harper Gerringer, and J. Earl Gerringer; his brothers’ wives Pauline Gerringer and Juanita (Nita) Gerringer of Newport News; and many other beloved in laws, nieces, and nephews too numerous to mention but never forgotten.
Visitation will take place at W. J. Smith and Son Funeral Home on Harpersville Rd, on Monday May 20th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A private family graveside service will take place on Tuesday, May 21st, at the Peninsula Memorial Park. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday May 21st at 2 p.m. at the Chesapeake.
In lieu of flowers, Carr asked that donations be made to the Chesapeake Benevolent Fund in his name.
Carr was, until the very end, a loving and devoted husband, a wonderful father and grandfather, and a friend to all that had the opportunity to make his acquaintance.
