Nurney L. Williams


    BURLINGTON — Nurney Loften “Porter or Tomato Man” Williams, Jr., age 91, of Altamahaw went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of the late Lillian Eastwood Williams.
    Nurney was employed most of his life as a plumber and he also worked in the Textile Industry. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Aleutian Islands during WW II. Nurney was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He enjoyed sharing his tomatoes with his family and neighbors. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
    Survivors include his daughter, Lucy of Burlington; grandchildren, Laura (Darren) Holben of Tuscon, Arizona and Charles Shepherd of Burlington; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Gotto of Jacksonville, Florida and Kayla Holben of Tuscon, Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter, Lillian Mamie Williams; parents, Nurney Williams, Sr. and Ella Gerringer Williams; son-in-law,
Gerald “Jerry” Shepherd;
sisters, Katherlene Meeks and Brucie Leonard and a brother, John L. Williams.
    A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church by Rev. Dave Gilbert and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday at the church and other times at the home of his daughter. Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
