He was a life-long member of Peace Lutheran Church in Gibsonville, where he formerly served on the church council.
He was a proud World War II U. S. Navy veteran, serving on the LST 1120 in the Pacific, during the Battle of Okinawa, the invasion of the Philippines, and in the preparation for the invasion of Japan.
Mr. Gerringer attended the dedication ceremony of the World War II Memorial in May 2004 in Washington, D.C., and is listed on the Memorial Registry.
In addition to his parents, Andy Boston Gerringer and Annie Wyrick Gerringer, he was predeceased by his daughter, Cynthia Gerringer Apple; brothers, A. B. Gerringer and Cline Gerringer; three sisters, Hazel Gerringer Smith, Eva Gerringer McIntyre, and Vergie Gerringer Fryar.
He worked 25 years for Cone Mills Corporation as a textile printer, and retired from the Guilford County Prison Farm in 1987.
Raised on a farm in Guilford County, "Paw-Paw" remained a farmer at heart: always raising a large garden, driving his cub tractor, and helping out on his daughter's farm in Browns Summit.
His seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he enjoyed sharing their accomplishments with others.
470, Colon L. Gerringer
