Vance Alton Apple, 73, of Hickory passed away Thursday, June 21, 2012.
Born July 9, 1938 in Gibsonville, N.C., he was the son of the late Vaden Leonard Apple and Mae Lowe Apple. Vance was a graduate of Gibsonville High School and N.C. State University where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He and his wife Eleanor moved to Hickory in 1966 where he was employed with GE for 10 years before moving into the furniture industry at Vanguard Furniture until his retirement. He later opened a freight management company in Mooresville, N.C.
Vance was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church where he enjoyed the Joy Sunday School Class, was active in the scouting program and served the church in many capacities. He was an avid Wolfpack fan, loved biking with the Over – the -Hill Gang and took great joy in his dog Sassy. He was a lover of the outdoors and enjoyed traveling all over the world, but his greatest passion was for his family. He enjoyed nothing more than watching his grandchildren play ball and spending time with all 9 of them.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Eleanor Hodges Apple of the home, two sons; Robert Gary Apple and wife Machell of Hickory and Keith Douglas Apple and wife Gay of Hickory, a daughter; Karen Apple Barkley and husband Matt of Hickory, a brother; Lloyd Apple and wife Sally of McLeansville, N.C., two sisters; Hilda Evans and husband Al of Greensboro, N.C. and Carolyn Childress and husband Mitch of Gibsonville, N.C., granddaughters; Brianna Woodsby and husband Jon of Spartanburg, S.C., Lauren Apple and fiancé Casey Davis of Winston-Salem and Savannah Apple of Hickory, grandsons; Tyler Apple, Jacob Apple, Nicholas Barkley, Daniel Barkley, Gabe Barkley and Josh Barkley all of Hickory, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2012 2:00 P.M. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Andrews officiating. The family will receive friends at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 6:30 – 8:30 P.M..
