Ruth Bigelow Jones
CHAPEL HILL - Ruth Bigelow Jones passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at her home in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Ruth was born to Col. Albert and Margaret Munroe Bigelow in Hutchinson, Kansas, on July 23, 1930, the youngest of five children. After graduating from Topeka High School in 1948, she attended the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. While in Chicago, she met James Leo Jones from Alamance County, North Carolina, who was there attending the Coyne Electrical College.
They were married on October 29, 1950 and while Leo reported for duty in the Army, Ruth returned to Chicago to earn her diploma in 1951. Later they settled in Alamance County where Ruth began her nursing career as a labor and delivery nurse at the local hospital. Leo’s family warmly welcomed the city girl and she readily adjusted to life on the farm.
Ruth and Leo lived in the Burlington area until 1960, with six of their seven children born there.
The family then moved to Rose Hill, where their youngest child was born. After the children reached school age, Ruth resumed her nursing career, working in Dr. Corbett Quinn's office in Magnolia.
In 1974 Leo was offered a position with Pilch, Inc. in Statesville, and the family relocated. Ruth was hired at Davis Hospital, first as a staff nurse and then as head nurse of Orthopedics until her retirement in 1992. She received the Frist Humanitarian Award in 1987. After retirement, Ruth served for 20 years with the Sunshine Volunteers at the hospital until she and Leo moved to Chapel Hill. Throughout her life, she was an advocate for the training of healthcare / nursing professionals and for access to healthcare for all those who needed it. Several nurses at Davis announced they had chosen that path because of Ruth’s encouragement.
Ruth always loved to read and was fond of mysteries. She made pickles and jellies, using the cucumbers and various fruits grown at home, and frequently gave them as gifts. After retirement, she took up golf at Lakewood Golf Club, where in time she ran the Ladies League and assisted Leo in managing tournaments. She was also an active member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville, where for years she was a faithful member of the Christian Forum Sunday School Class and her Bible study group.
A regular correspondent, Ruth kept in touch with family, friends and various acquaintances she had met throughout her life. Among those acquaintances were young people from other countries whom Ruth and Leo welcomed into their home after the Jones children had grown up and moved out. She would always include handwritten notes in the birthday and Christmas cards she sent. Ruth was known for her compassion and her family cannot remember ever hearing her say an unkind word about another person.
Ruth was preceded in death by Leo, her husband of 65 years, their youngest son James Luther (Luke) Jones, her brothers Allen, Lawrence, and Robert Bigelow, and her sister Alma Howard.
She is survived by six children: Gary (Kathy) Jones of Tarboro, Sherry Jones of Chapel Hill, Christy Jones of Chapel Hill, Rodney Jones of Hillsborough, Ronald Jones of Wingate, and Pam (Kevin) O'Brien of Baltimore, MD; by nine grandchildren; by eight great-grandchildren; and by one greatgreat-grandchild.
During her later years, Ruth enjoyed the gentle and patient caregiving provided by Helah Smith of Acorn Home Care Services and was well taken care of by the staff of Dr. Jim Manor.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, at Christ United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth’s name to the Sunshine Volunteers at Davis Regional Medical Center, 218 Old Mocksville Rd, Statesville, NC 28625; the Building Fund at Christ United Methodist Church, 800 Market St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516; or Planned Parenthood.
