GREENSBORO, NC — Former Republican United States Representative, J Howard Coble, 84, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015.

A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at Westover Church, 505 Muirs Chapel Road, Greensboro, NC 27410.

 The interment will be private.

Howard was born on March 18, 1931, in Greensboro, to the late Joseph Howard and Johnnie Coble. He was educated in the public schools of Guilford County where he developed his love for baseball. He played high school baseball for Alamance and American Legion ball in Liberty for two years. After high school, he attended Appalachian State University then joined the United States Coast Guard. He served over five years and reached the rank of Captain and remained as a reservist for an additional 18 years. Upon discharge from the military, he attended Guilford College and received a degree in History. Howard then obtained his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Howard spent nearly 20 years as a practicing attorney. Howard held state and local positions that included Assistant County Attorney for Guilford County and Assistant U.S. Attorney, Middle District of North Carolina and Secretary of Revenue for North Carolina. In 1979 Coble was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives where he served until his election to Congress in 1984.

Howard was a U.S. Representative for North Carolina’s 6th Congressional district for 30 years, serving from 1985 to 2015. In July 2008, Howard won the Republican primary unopposed and became North Carolina’s longest-serving Republican U.S. congressman. Howard credited his successful career to his wonderful staff, whom he loved like a second family.

Howard was a member of many professional organizations that were too numerous to list. Howard loved spending time with family, which involved attending sporting events involving various family members. He enjoyed holiday gatherings, especially the laughter, jokes and food which he loved.

Howard was a member of Alamance Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. He was devoted to attending the prayer breakfasts in Washington, DC, during his years in Congress.

He is survived by his brother, Ray H. Coble Sr. and wife Barbara; nephews, Ray Coble Jr. and wife Chris, Mark Coble and wife Barbara, and Bryan Coble; niece, Amanda Ratliff and husband Jim; nine greatnephews; one great-niece; and three great-great-nephews; as well as dear friend, Bonnie Waynick.
