Obituary Online notes for Paul Melvin STANFIELD
Veteran US Army Air Corp WWII

From Citty Funeral Home Obituary:

Paul Melvin “Sam” Stanfield,90, of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of Danville Virginia, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by family on Friday, April 11th .

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00PM Monday (April 14, 2014) at Citty Funeral Home Chapel (in Reidsville, NC) and burial will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery with Military Rites.

Paul was born and raised near Reidsville, NC in the Williamsburg community to the late Paul and Ara M. Stanfield. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Stanfield of Burlington, NC.

After graduating Reidsville High School in 1943, Paul was drafted into the Army Air Corp. After extensive training throughout the country, he was assigned to an 11 man, B-24 crew as the Flight Engineer, 5th Air Force, 63rd Bomb Squadron, 43rd Bomb Group “The Seahawks”. His crew was deployed to Clark Air Base on the Philippine island of Luzon. From there his crew flew 26, low level, non escorted, nighttime combat missions throughout the South China sea and Yangtze River that averaged 18 hours each. His crew was 1 of 5 crews, out of 24, to survive the war. Paul received multiple medals and honors for his Pacific Theatre service.

After his honorable service to his country, Paul returned home to NC in the fall of 1945 and married his sweetheart, Helen, on January 1st, 1946. He then pursued his passion for flying and became a commercial pilot in Reidsville. A few years later he was hired as a field engineer for Trans Continental Gas Pipeline Corp and eventually retired from Transco with more than 30 years of service.

He was a long time member and usher at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Danville.

He and his wife, Helen, were avid ballroom dancers and were active members of several dance clubs for many years. They enjoyed traveling throughout the US and internationally, and entertaining family and friends at their home in Danville. Paul organized the first reunion of his original B-24 flight crew in the 1970’s and continued to organize the reunion of the crew for many years. He was the last surviving member. Paul was an active member of the Combat Airmen of WWII and frequently visited public schools throughout NC and VA where he would speak to students about his service and experience in WWII. It was very important to him that the younger generation understood the war and hear firsthand accounts of his experience. Paul was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was a true southern gentleman. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  470, Paul Melvin "Sam" Stanfield
