Vernon Douglas Barber
CHARLOTTE — Vernon Douglas Barber died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on Jan. 12, 2016 in Charlotte, NC, at the age of 65.
Doug is survived by his mother, Margaret Smith Barber of Gibsonville, NC; his beloved children, Ruth Anne “Ruthie” Barber of High Point, NC and Landon Douglas Barber and wife Charlotte; grandchildren, Camille, Quinn and Levi Barber of Charlotte, NC; his brothers, R. Christopher “Chris” Barber and Timothy “Tim” R. Barber and wife Joan; and nephew, Timothy Jacob Barber of Gibsonville, NC.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon James Barber.
Doug was born May 10, 1950, in Burlington, NC, to Margaret Smith Barber and Vernon James Barber. He graduated from Western High School in 1968 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s of Business Degree from Elon University in 1972. Doug had a long and successful career in the mortgage banking industry in North Carolina and Florida, most notably with Bank of America for 40 years. He was skilled with numbers and negotiations but, most of all, skilled with people. He had a great many friends and loves in his lifetime and had no regrets. He lived a life of intention, resolve, and courage. He did it his way. Doug loved the beach and the sea and spent the majority of his adult life by the ocean. He was an avid sailor. He had a great sense of humor and will be missed sorely by all those who knew him.
A visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16th, at Rich and Thompson Funeral Service in Burlington, NC, with a graveside service to follow at 1 p.m. in Alamance Memorial Park. The Rev. Judson Dunlap will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Doug’s life.
The family will receive guests at the home of Margaret Barber in Gibsonville, NC.
