Burlington - Elder Wallis Art Smith, 69, of 1121 Rascoe Dameron Road, Burlington died at his home on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at 5:20 p.m. following four months of illness.

He was born in Alamance County on December 21, 1936. He was the husband of Ella Marie Massey Smith who survives and the son of Elder James Harvey Smith and Alice Rudd Smith, both deceased. He was a member of Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church since 1958. He was ordained as a minister on April 8, 1962. He was a pastor of Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church since 1970, Gilliam Primitive Baptist Church since 1963, Lick Fork Primitive Baptist Church since 1965, and McCray Primitive Baptist Church since 1971. He was a former pastor of Mount Ararat Primitive Baptist Church in Pennsylvania County, Va. and Gooch Memorial Primitive Baptist Church in Stem, N.C.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include one daughter, Diana Smith Walker and son-in-law, Christopher N. Walker of Gibsonville; one son, Timothy W. Smith and daughter-in-law, Melissa Roberts Smith of Burlington; two granddaughters, Savannah Marie and Jennie Elizabeth Walker; and one brother, Elder Donald Smith and sister-in-law, Lib Smith of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Virginia Smith Scott, Nellie Smith Deiner, and two infant sisters and one brother, James Elmer Smith.

The funeral was conducted at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at 3 p.m. by Elder Ray King, Elder Harold Pittman, and Elder Garland Vick. Singing by the congregation began at 2:45 p.m. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The family received friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Other times they will be at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, to Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church, to Gilliam Primitive Baptist Church, to McCray Primitive Baptist Church, or to Lick Fork Primitive Baptist Church.
