Helen Loy Hartman

BURLINGTON — Helen Loy Hartman, born Dec. 27, 1933, went to be with her Savior on April 13, 2016 at the age of 82.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Earle Durand Hartman III. She was the youngest child of and was preceded in death by her parents, Milton Cook Loy and Mamie Malone Loy; three brothers, Craig Loy, M.C. Loy Jr., Richard W. Loy; and three sisters, Nell Loy Clapp, Barbara Loy Stratford and Maxine Loy McGalliard.

She is survived by four daughters and sons in-law, Sandra and Billy Judy, Melissa and Dean Towery, Jo and Billy Leath, Linda and David Somers. She had wonderful times with her seven grandchildren, Jennifer Smith; Melanie Ball, John Somers, David Turner, Stephanie Turner, Sarah Denton and Jayson Judy. She also had eight great-grandchildren!

Helen was a vivacious, beautiful woman in her youth. She was in the first graduating class of Walter Williams H.S. (class of ‘52) and attended many reunions over the years. When she was just a young wife with four little girls, she went to business school. After graduating, she worked for former Gov. Bob Scott as his secretary on the farm. The majority of her life, she spent working as an accountant at Western Electric Co. (later Lucent Technologies) for over 30 years. She made many friends and was known for her witty artistic cartoons and jokes. She retired May 27, 1988.

Helen sang with the WENOCA choir, the Burlington Centennial Community Choir, and the Shiloh Presbyterian choir. She was very active in the Presbyterian Woman of the Church, Circle, Meals-on-Wheels, and served several terms as an Elder at Shiloh Presbyterian, where she was a member all her life. She and her friend, Carolyn Martin, were instrumental in having a memorial garden built at Shiloh Presbyterian Church where her husband’s ashes are buried. Her ashes will be placed beside his in a family ceremony following the memorial service.

Helen loved golf. She won a chance to play in the pro-am of the GGO, now called the Wyndham tournament, and was the first woman (dressed in all pink!) to ever play in that prestigious golf tournament! She played in local tournaments with two of her grandsons. Both boys went on to get golf scholarships at Elon University. She and her husband liked to take their children out on their boat for water skiing and recreation. Neighbors and friends loved her well. She loved ACBL Bridge and meeting her golf buddies for lunch when she was no longer able to play. She loved traveling with friends to bridge tournaments or golf outings.

Helen had a wonderful sense of humor and could tell some colorful jokes! She loved her dogs and cats, and her swimming pool. She lived in the house of her dreams that she and Earle built on part of her daddy Buck’s farm on Terrace Drive in Burlington for 44 years. After E.D. (as she called her husband) died on Oct. 7, 2006, Helen continued to maintain the house until finally selling it and moving to Oak Creek Apartments on Baldwin Road for about three years. Then, as her health was failing, she moved to Blakey Hall in Elon, November of 2015.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Shiloh Presbyterian Church, 2638 Grand Oaks Blvd., Burlington, NC. The family will receive guests following the service.

Memorials may be made in her honor to Shiloh Presbyterian Church or your favorite charity.
