Cora Mae Terrell Lackey dies at 100
After more than 100 years, Cora Mae Terrell Lackey is now secure in the arms of Jesus. Mrs. Lackey, the wife of the late Rupert Jackson Lackey Sr., died at 12:09 a.m. May 21, 2016 at the Hospice Home of Alamance County.
Mrs. Lackey was born in Caswell County to the late William Wesley and Fannie Bet Underwood Terrell on Aug. 22, 1915.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Rupert Jackson “Jack” Lackey Jr. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Terrell and Isaac (Mildred) Terrell; eight sisters, Onie (Braxton) Crutchfield, Effie (Jewel) Hayes, Blanche (Bruce) Walker, Hattie Terrell, Fannie Littell (Emil) Overman (Bennie), Bessie (Boyce) Knox, Eva (Carl) Webster and Doris (Walker) Hunter.
Mrs. Lackey is survived by her daughter, Sarah (Bobby) Finley of the home; eight grandchildren, Susan Finley, Cheri (Danny) Thomas, Kerry (Kirsten) Finley, John (Danita) Lackey, Christine (Brian) King, and Kimberly (Robert) Surrette, Tyler Lackey and Josh Lackey; and nine great-grandchildren, Katrina Thomas, Kellie Thomas, Hannah Thomas, Emma Finley, Tony Allen, Hunter Lackey, Parker Lackey, Jack Surrette, and Nathan Denton. She is also survived by a daughter-inlaw, Kim Lackey; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lackey was a member of the First Baptist Church in Burlington for 91 years and shared her faith with everyone she met. She taught youth for a number of years and taught adult ladies for many years. Her church family was an integral part of her life.
Mrs. Lackey began her career in the textile industry and later worked as a bookkeeper. She worked as a dental assistant/receptionist for Dr. Joel Walker, DDS until her retirement in 1980.
Visitation for Mrs. Lackey will be in the Gathering Place at First Baptist Church, Burlington, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, with a memorial service following at noon. There will be a private burial at Kerr’s Chapel Baptist Church.
