From: "U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970," Nat'l Member No. 26011, and # 28746 These sources gives the date of Jane [Marshall] McLean's death as 10 Feb, 1790.
The applications were written by Robert Armistead McLean and Arthur Lawrence McLean, and were submitted 21 Jan 1914, and 1 June 1916, both of which predate all of the cemetery surveys which list Jane's death date as 1 Feb 1780. 1914 is nearly 100 years earlier than now, so if the date was taken from her headstone when it was more legible, it may have more value as a source for the date of her death. If church records for her date of death were used for the date of death as 1 Feb 1780, then of course, they would be the more applicable. However, I [Nancy] have the entire book of records from Alamance Church from the microfilm at the NC State Archives, and the earliest baptism records begin with 1843, and the records of death for earlier than that only record the deaths of pastors and deacons and elders of Alamance Church.
Furthermore, the Arthur Lawrence McLean application is neatly typed and provides a long source list of materials used. I will quote it vertbatim here:
"Certified copies of Bible record, proving descent from Joseph McLean. Bible IN POSSESSION of Judge Edward Curd McLean, SHERMAN, TEXAS [This was in 1916.] Tombs of John McLean and Jane Marshall McLean, Alamance Church, near Greensboro, Guilford Co, NC."
470, Jane Marshall McLean
