Obituary Online notes for Catherine SHEPHERD (SHAVER)
Catharine is the daughter of William (Shaver, Schaefer , Shepherd and Catherine Shepherd.

William Schaefer was a German immigrant who moved here from Pennsylvania to Guilford County on or before 1775. He bought 274 acres on March 1, 1775 in the Alamance Creek Area. Records from the Brick Church say he had nine Children. Died Sept, 2 1801.

The German name Schaefer was hard for the court clerks of the era to spell so it was written as Shaver and shows up as Shaver in early census records. William's children used the Shaver name but their children the third generation began using the English version Shepherd.
As the different families began growing in the very early 1800s and without little to no schooling the name was spelled different ways even among family members. SO most all of the Shepherd's, Shepard's and Sheppard's in Guilford and Alamance Counties are related.
