Mae Asbell Shaw
MEBANE - Mae Edla Asbell Shaw, 95, of Mebane, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2016.
A native of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of the late William Jesse Asbell and Mary Jolliff Asbell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cook Shaw, her brother, Emerson Ray Asbell, her sisters, Merlee Asbell McDonald and Lois Asbell Stokes, sisters-inlaw Mary Ellen Shaw Boyles and Kathryn Shaw Miller, a nephew, Henry Clay Stokes III, and her son-in-law, Jimmy Covington.
A graduate of Louisburg College and UNC-G, she was a teacher of French and English in Johnston and Alamance County Schools.
Among the highlights of her teaching career were the trips with her students to France and England.
She held memberships in national, state and local educations associations, the Retired School Personnel of Alamance County, and Delta Kappa Gamma International.
She was a volunteer docent at the Alamance County Historical Museum.
In 1971, she was named Eastern Alamance High School’s Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Shaw had remained active in the Mebane United Methodist Church where she served as the wedding coordinator and membership secretary.
She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Altar Guild, scholarship committee, worship committee, Singles and Single Again, and the Morning Glory Bible study. She was selected as “Lay Person of the Year” in 2001.
A Paschal Candle was presented to the church in her honor by her family in 2010.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jean Shaw Covington of Mebane, her son, James Emerson Shaw and wife Audrey, grandchildren, Courtney Covington, Caroline Covington Massey and husband Greg, James David Shaw and wife Kristin, Jessica Shaw Sheets and husband Anthony, step-grandson Paul Goodell and wife Jessica Hieronymus, stepgreat grandsons Landon Massey and wife Kelly, Joel Massey and wife Dana, Jason Massey; greatgranddaughters Morgan Covington and Peyton Shaw, step great-great grandson Everett Lee Massey plus many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at McClure Funeral and Cremation Service in Mebane from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and other times at the home.
A service of worship and celebration of her life will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Mebane United Methodist Church with Pastor Johnnie Wright officiating and assisted by Rev. David Ealy.
The service of committal will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mebane United Methodist Church, Alamance-Caswell Hospice or to the donor’s favorite charity.
The family thanks the staff of the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields for their support and care for Mae Edla during her last months and much appreciation to the professional staff of Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell for their assistance to Mae Edla and her family.
