Obituary Online notes for John COOK Sr.
John died in Wayne County, TN. It is not certain who his parents were or where he was born. Some have speculated NC, KY, VA or Germany.
If anyone can add to the body of knowledge on this family, please let me know.
Some say his first wife was Nancy Elizabeth Fogleman Turley who he married about 1790. This name has been rejected by Find a Grave contributor Sandra Tedford and others.
However, Find a Grave member Cynthia Cloud (#48043628) says John's first wife was Elizabeth Coleman whose name has been passed down in her family for generations.
No verification has been provided for either name. John later married Elizabeth Rose about 1819.

The following from Early Settlers of Wayne Co., TN:
"John Cook came to Indian Creek at an early date and settled on the farm adjoining Daniel Eaton on the west side and lying in the fork of Indian and Weatherford Creeks.
Mr. Cook had four sons: David, Martin, Christian, and John Cook,Jr.. The latter, John Jr. is said to have obtained the first marriage licence issued in Wayne County, Tennessee. His bride was a Miss Martin, a sister to the late John A. Martin of Martin's Mills.
John Cook Sr. was a German by birth and a hatter by trade.
He was the great-grandfather of your townsman Dr.Cook, and the grandfather of H.C.Greeson. John Cook Sr. had three sons by his second marriage: Austin, Henry, and Frederick. Frederick lives just across the line in Hardin County, Tennnesse, on a portin of the land owned by Hugh McCarn."

For a long time and according to available information, no buriel had been identified so a virtual memorial was established. However, Jerry Edwards identified the old Shady Grove cemetery, now Gillis Cemetery, as the correct cemetery in Hardin County, TN. 470, John Cook, Sr
