Theodore F. "Ted" Sorrells, 86, of the Deerfield Community, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010.
A native of Buncombe County, he was the youngest of twelve children of Mary Ann Bird and Victor Grayson Sorrells. He attended public schools and graduated from Swannanoa High School in 1941. Shortly thereafter, he went to Washington, DC where he served a machinist's apprenticeship at the Washington Navy Yard. After that, he attended and graduated from the Capitol Radio and Engineering Institute. In 1951, he began his Television career with his employment at The Evening Star Broadcasting Company, an ABC affiliate station. He served there in a number of capacities culminating with his appointment to the position of chief engineer. After retirement in 1978, he and his wife, returned to North Carolina and supervised the building of their home on the side of Town Mountain. In 2000 they moved to the Deerfield Community.
His wife, Alice Shepherd Sorrells, preceded him in death this past March, 2010.
He is survived by a sister, Helen S. Davis of Arlington, VA and a host of nieces and nephews, including Bruce Shipley of Asheville and William Shipley of Charlotte.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, June 12, in St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield.
