TAYLORSVILLE — Mr. Leo Hutchins Rice, 82, of Taylorsville, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville, following a period of declining health. Born Feb. 16, 1919, in Caswell County, he was the husband for 58 years to the late Gladys Lucille Trollinger Rice, and the son of Jimmy and Ossie Massey Rice, both deceased. He was a member of Grove Park Baptist Church in Burlington where he served as a Children’s Sunday school teacher for many years. He worked with Life of Virginia Insurance Co. for 20 years and served as a school guard and operator of the children’s boats at the Burlington City Park. He was a member of the Mebane Exchange Club that honored him with the Book of Golden Deeds Award in December of 1995. In 1999, he and his wife moved to Taylorsville. Survivors include a son, Donald Leo (Wanda) Rice of Harvest, Ala.; a daughter, Linda (Jack) Greer of Taylorsville; two brothers, Charlie Rice and Carl (Deanie) Trollinger, both of Burlington; four sisters, Edna McAdams and Thelma (Carl) Farrington, both of Burlington, Lena Mahaley of Yanceyville, and Nellie (Robert Lee) Mahaley of Providence; four grandchildren, Tiffany and Jason Doty of Denver and Patrick and Caroline Greer of Kingwood, Texas, Holly Danielle Rice and Richard Leo Rice, both of Harvest; one great-granddaughter, Mary Hope Greer of Kingwood; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, the Rev. G. Julius Rice, Fred Rice, Thomas Rice and Robert Rice and a sister, Myrtle Mahaley. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Grove Park Baptist Church by Dr. Charles Hutchins and Dr. Roy Taylor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and one hour before the service on Friday.
