Obituary Online notes for Jack Junior SOUTHERN
Mr. Jack Junior Southern, 81, passed away on Wednesday evening, January 2, 2013, at Countryside Manor.
Mr. Southern's funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 7, at Stokesdale Christian Church with Rev. Kevin Cochran officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A native of Stokes County, Mr. Southern was born on May 26, 1931, the son of the late William Isaac and Jessie Flynn Southern. He was retired as a captain from the Piedmont Triad International Airport Fire Department with 27 years service. Additionally, he served as a volunteer on the Stokesdale Fire Department for 28 years. An active community member, Mr. Southern was active in the Council on Aging, and was instrumental in the formation of the Stokesdale Senior Citizens group. He was also involved in the Boy Scout troop, 4-H, American Red Cross, and Stokesdale Christian Church. He enjoyed bus tours and fishing with friends and family at the coast. On May 26, 1951, he married Lillie Hedrick.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-one years, Lillie H. Southern of the home, daughter Catherine S. Gourley and her husband, Clay, of Stokesdale; son Jack Michael Southern and his wife Delores, of Oak Island; three grandchildren Patrick Gourley and his wife, Ruth, Jessica Smothers and her husband, David, and Rachel Southern; and two great grandchildren Levi Smothers and Sofia Gourley.
He was preceded in death by brothers Hardin and Mack, and a sister Myrtle Virginia.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4 until 6 p.m. at Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel, and other times at the home of Dot and Julius Gourley, 220 Farrar Store Road.
