Floyd Grant Combs, 80, of Combs Street, Burlington died at the Hospice Home on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 11:22 p.m. following a brief illness.
A native of Hillsborough, he was the husband of Clara Brown Combs, who survives and the son of Eli Grant Combs and Amy Watkins Combs, both deceased. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict and retired from Western Electric. He was a former member of the CWA and Telephone Pioneers of America and an avid guitarist. Floyd was a member of Springwood Presbyterian Church where he taught the Adult Sunday School Class and served as a deacon, elder, elder emeritus and choir member.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two daughters, Denise Harward and husband Barry of Mebane and Annette Gentry and husband Andrew of Graham; three grandchildren, Joshua Harward and wife Kasey of Raleigh and April Harward and Amy Harward, both of Mebane; a step-granddaughter, Miranda Gentry-Siegel of Wausau, WI; two sisters, Helen Barnwell and husband Ernest of Burlington, Opal Gilbert of Livingston, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Combs and three brothers, Herman, Tommy and Gaither Combs.
The funeral service will be conducted at Springwood Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. Genie Martin and Rev. Bennie Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Clara Brown Combs, age 89, formerly of Burlington, North Carolina, peacefully entered her eternal home on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, while residing at Clapps Nursing Center in Pleasant Garden, North Carolina.
Born in Guilford County, Clara was the beloved wife of the late Floyd Grant Combs and the cherished daughter of the late Andy Alexander Brown and Mary Davis Brown. She dedicated 21 years of faithful service to Liberty Hosiery Mills, where her strong work ethic and quiet perseverance were evident to all. A woman of deep and abiding faith, Clara was a devoted member of Springwood Presbyterian Church, where she found great joy in worship, fellowship, and serving others.
Clara’s life was a beautiful testimony of faith, family, and steadfast love. She leaves behind a devoted family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughters, Denise Combs Harward and Annette Combs Gentry and her husband, Andrew; her beloved grandchildren, Josh Harward and his wife, Kasey, Amy Stegall and her husband, Keith, April Morton and her husband, Ricky, and Miranda Gentry-Siegel and her husband, Jason. She was joyfully blessed with great-grandchildren—Austin, Landon, and Sydney Harward; Jaxson Stegall; Julie and Reese Morton; and David Siegel—each a source of immense joy and pride. Clara is also lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law, Opal Gilbert of Texas; her nieces, Peggy Patton, Phyllis Stillman, and Charlene Whatley; along with many other dear friends and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, as well as her cherished siblings: sisters Vallie Brown Palmer and Pauline Brown Duckworth, and brothers Andy Dale Brown, Bobby Lee Brown, Melvin L. Brown, and James M. Brown. While her family mourns her earthly passing, they rejoice in the blessed assurance of eternal life and take comfort in knowing Clara is now reunited with loved ones who have gone before her and is resting peacefully in the presence of her Lord and Savior.
A woman of steadfast faith, Clara—prior to her illness—rarely missed a Sunday at church and drew great strength from worship and Christian fellowship. She loved gardening, sang joyfully in the church choir, and shared 56 years of marriage with her devoted husband. Clara delighted in life’s simple blessings: spending precious time with her grandchildren, taking brisk walks, searching for hidden treasures at yard sales, and collecting salt and pepper shakers that reflected her cheerful and giving spirit. Known for her kindness and generosity, she was always caring for others and lived her life as a faithful servant to those around her. Her compassion, devotion, and love will remain an enduring inspiration to all who were blessed to know her.
A celebration of Clara’s life will be held at Springwood Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Springwood Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family invites everyone to continue sharing memories and fellowship at a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the services. [38933]
