Obituary Online notes for Joseph Jacob HARAND
Joseph Jacob Harand died at home on June 1, 2016 at age 89. He was born on December 4, 1926 in Newton, NJ to the late Walter I. and Helen S. Harand. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Harand. After graduating from Tenafly High School, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Upon his discharge, he attended N.C. State University where he played basketball for Everett Case and became an avid Wolfpack fan for life. He graduated in 1950 with a B.S. Degree in Textile Chemistry and Dyeing. Joe began a long and satisfying career in textiles, working for a number of different textile companies, until he formed his own business, Dundee Color and Chemical, Inc in 1972. He chose the name Dundee after his father's company, where he had worked as an adolescent.
Joe and his wife of 66 years, Nell Klyman Harand, moved to Shelby on June 1, 1966, exactly fifty years before his death. Joe is survived by Nell, for whom he was a devoted caregiver, and their three daughters, Dian Smith (Jerry) of Winston-Salem, Lynn Hankins (Jack) of Charlotte, and Susan Young (Bill) of Shelby. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Emily Davis (Josh), Julie Smith, Joe Young, and Will Young, and three great-grandchildren.
A man who never met a stranger, cultivating and nurturing lifelong friendships were a priority for Joe. He formed friendships through basketball, as well as his beloved Sigma Nu fraternity, that he maintained throughout his life. For years, he organized reunions for his basketball teammates and fraternity brothers on an annual basis. He treasured the relationships he formed throughout his career in the textile industry. It was important for him to stay connected to his friends, and he made that a priority. People generally gravitated to Joe as they recognized his authenticity.
Joe was passionate about the Boys and Girls Club, where he devoted countless time and resources to support their mission. Through the years, he used his background in sales to sell tickets to various fund-raising events. It was not uncommon for him to solicit neighbors for donations while retrieving his morning newspaper! In 2015, the Boys and Girls Club recognized Joe and Nell by naming the gym the "Joe and Nell Harand Gymnasium."
Burial will be private at a later time. Visitation will be at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday, June 3 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
