William “Gene” Poythress
BURLINGTON - William “Gene” Poythress, 89, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on December 25, 1930 in Alamance County to the late LeBaron DeKalb Poythress and Mattie McAdams Poythress, and was married to Eve Walters Poythress who survives.
Gene retired as a Plumbing and Building Inspector for Orange County. He was a member of Mebane Street Church of Christ; an avid lifelong weight lifter, member of Super Fitness Training Center, a 3-time NC Arm Wrestling Champion and a 2-time US Arm Wrestling Champion.
Gene was a US Army veteran and a US Marine veteran.
Survivors other than his wife, Eve Poythress include a son, Hal Poythress; a daughter, Stacey Poythress Rainey and husband, Paul; granddaughter, Tyler Gene Rainey and a sister, Irene Qualls. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Florence Hudson and Helen Horner; and brothers, Frank and Shelton Poythress.
