Obituary Online notes for Pfc. Bryant Russell POWELL
US Marine PFC Bryant Russell Powell, Vietnam Veteran, resident of Lake Waccamaw, NC.

US Marine Private First Class Bryant Russell Powell was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps Selective Service and a Draftee, PFC Powell served our country until October 11th, 1966 in Quang Nam, South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and was not married. It was reported that Bryant died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. Bryant was born on April 4th, 1945 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. PFC Powell is on panel 11E, line 067 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.

A friend and aquaintance. Bryant was already a hero when he perished. All of us boys at the home wanted to be like him. He was a patriot, a friend, and a great young man. Rest in peace hero. You're not forgotten. Henry Mullis, China Grove, NC 28138.

Word has it that he joined the Marines because his girlfriend at the time broke up with him. Bryant was a hero before he joined the Marine Corp. We grew up together. He was a hero friend and big brother to all of us who knew him at boys Home. Bryant was a hero to all the boys at the Boys Home at Lake Waccamaw, NC. He was one of the finest football players I ever saw. He played in the East-West Allstar game a few months before he was killed. He never let the bullies pick on the younger kids. No one messed with Bryant Powell. Thank you for giving your life for my freedom. You are not forgotten. Gene Cheek, P.O. Box 234, Newton, NC 28658.

Bryant Powell was a fine, young man who was respected by his classmates. He was taken from us all too soon. I wish he could have grown older with us, but his duty to his country came first. He is remembered fondly by his family and friends. I remember his memorial service on the hill overlooking Lake Waccamaw. Bryant, we still miss you. Pat, Patricia Lamb Medlin, 854 Bella Coola Rd, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450.

He was the son Margaret S. Powell, Route #1, Gibsonville, North Carolina.

He served with Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 1st Marine Division, 3rd MAF.

He was awarded The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Combat Action Ribbon(CAR), The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
