David "Big Dave" Leon Kernodle
November 21, 1956 ~ June 18, 2021 (age 64)
Burlington - David "Big Dave" Kernodle, 64, of Burlington passed away peacefully on Friday, June 18, 2021 at AuthoraCare Collective Hospice Home with his family by his side.
David was born in Rockingham County on November 21, 1956, the son of Louise Kernodle Mansfield and the late Leon “Buddy” Mansfield.
David was the owner/operator of (former)Burlington Performance Automotive for many years and also an official crew member with the AHDRA – All-Harley-Drag-Racing-Association, traveling all over the U.S. “Big Dave” lived a life full of adventures and on-the-edge! His happy times were working underneath the hood of a car at his shops; doing burnouts and drag racing his hotrod cars, including his Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide, at many different drag strips. His passion for Harley Davidsons and Hotrods was known to all who knew him. It was no surprise that “Big Dave” was featured in several racing and AHDRA magazines doing what he loved best…..RACING! Underneath the strong presence and work ethic “Big Dave” had a big heart and was loved and respected by so many people from all walks of life. He loved his time spent with his loving wife, Dawn, who was his rock and stayed by his side all the way to the end. And he loved his 3 children!
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Sherrie "Dawn" Kernodle; three children, Macon Kernodle, Marissa Kernodle (Carl Wiggins) and Shelby Kernodle; a grandson Blaze Throneburg; his mother, Louise Kernodle Mansfield; two sisters, Gail Bright (Rev. Tommy) and Rita Wade (Donnie); a brother Bobby Mansfield (Patti) and his fur-babies Milo and Nipper.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Mullens and RN-Yajun French at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital; and to Emily, Nancy, Tina, Betsey and Phoebe of AuthoraCare Hospice Home of Burlington for the care they provided. Special thank you to Phoebe for being by the family’s side during David’s final transition Home.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 5-7 pm on Thursday at Omega Funeral Service & Crematory Chapel. You may share an online condolence by visiting www.omegafsc.com Arrangements are in the care of Omega Funeral Service & Crematory.
