Ruth (Sockwell) Teague

February 19, 1928 ~ March 23, 2019 (age 91)

Ruth Sockwell Teague went home to be with her Lord Jesus on March 23, passing peacefully in her home with family by her side.  Ruth was 91 years old and the matriarch of Reedy Fork Organic Farm in Elon, North Carolina.

Born February 19, 1928, Ruth was the daughter of George and Bess Sockwell and devoted her life to her family and the family farm.  She graduated from Greensboro College with a Home Economics Degree, and witnessed the farm transition from tobacco to dairy to organic dairy and feed over her lifetime.  She worked as a Cooperative Extension agent in Davidson County, where she met Franklin Jewel Teague, a fellow extension agent.  Though they were “not supposed to date, it worked out very well” with nearly 70 years of marriage and partnership leading their farm together.
Throughout her life, Ruth was guided by her faith and was a leader, Sunday school teacher, and choir member at Frieden’s Lutheran Church in Gibsonville.  She actively participated in the Frieden’s Home Demonstration Club and the Gibsonville Art & Literature Club.  She was known for her delicious home cooking and scrumptious baking.  In 1959, she won a national Gold Medal Flour baking contest, for which she was awarded a trip to California and a new oven.  Above all, she was the backbone of her family and the one enabled her husband and children to accomplish great achievements.  They are all grateful for her love, support, and faith.

Ruth is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Franklin, and her four children: David Teague and wife Susan Teague, Ellen Miller, Walt Teague and wife Patti Teague, and George Teague and wife Cherry Teague.  Ruth cherished her grandchildren: Laurin Teague Jordan, Karen Teague-Clark, Jennifer Teague, Amanda Miller Wachs, Ike Miller, Ben Miller, Natalie Teague, Emily Teague Palmieri, Taylor Teague, and Hayley Teague.  The light of Ruth’s final years was her 15 great grandchildren.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be at Frieden’s Lutheran Church in Gibsonville.  Visitation begins at 12:00 pm on March 26, with a celebration of life service at 2:00 pm.  Graveside service will follow immediately at the church cemetery, with a fellowship meal to conclude.  The family is grateful for the assistance of Rich & Thompson Funeral Home, Pastor Bill Zima of Frieden’s Lutheran Church, and all of the kind, patient, and loving caregivers that have assisted the family over the years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any gifts to be made to Ruth’s lifetime church, Frieden’s Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, 6001 NC Hwy 61, Gibsonville, NC 27249.  Online condolences may be extended at: www.richandthompson.com.

Upon her passing, The Peace Prayer of Saint Francis was found among Ruth’s things: “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace … For it is in giving that we receive, It is in self-forgetting that we find, And it is in dying to ourselves that we are born to eternal life.”  Thank you for all that you gave of yourself, Ruth/Maw-Maw. 261, Ruth (Sockwell) Teague
