Obituary Online notes for Robert Max SOCKWELL
MCLEANSVILLE
Longtime McLeansville, NC resident Robert "Max" Sockwell died Friday, January 12, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro of a worn-out and well-used heart. He lived most of his life on the farm at Huffine Mill Road, and had a deep love of the land. Following graduation from McLeansville High School, he enrolled at Maryville College, where he met the love of his life, Ethel Shockley. After graduation from Maryville, they married in 1954 and Max enlisted in the US Air Force. While stationed in San Antonio, both children were born. In 1959, Max moved his family back to the farm in McLeansville. Max worked as the county executive director for the Agricultural Conservation Stabilization Service (ASCS) for 30 years, retiring in 1988, and farmed all his life. Throughout his adult life, Max enjoyed photography, loved to travel, play golf, support the church with many volunteer positions, tinkering in a garden to share, being with family, and watching his beloved Carolina Tarheels play basketball. The family is grateful that the last game Max watched was an outstanding effort as the Tarheels rallied against Boston College. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ethel, his brother Gilbert (Bonnie); his daughter Vee Ann Nielsen (John); grandchildren Jennifer Rickman (Kevin), their children Charleigh, Ila, and Maxton; Mandy Patterson (Justin), their children Raegan and Eleanor; Tyler and Chris Nielsen; his son Jeff (Janet); daughter Sarah and partner Michael Wynant, son Daniel and partner Camille Muniz, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two sisters, Lucy McNeely and Hazel Connelly. A memorial service will be held at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 5120 Burlington Road, Greensboro, at 11 a.m. Monday, January 15. The family will receive friends after the worship service in the Christian Enrichment Center at the church. Rev. Jeff Sockwell and Rev. Ed Allred will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be directed to the Mt. Pleasant UMC. 470, Robert Max Sockwell
