Joann Learu Yates Shepherd
Joann Learu Yates Shepherd, 71, of Wilmington, N.C., died peacefully and courageously with her family surrounding her at New Hanover Regional Medical Center on October 29, 2002. Born November 20, 1930, in Luray, Virginia to Arthur Lewis and Mildred Shenk Yates, she graduated from Luray High School in 1948. Joann worked as a bookkeeper for the Skyline Company and in 1955 married her beloved Jacob "Jake" N. Shepherd. For the next 47 years, she was a dedicated wife and mother, raising three sons and four daughters as she followed her husband's career from Luray to Greensboro, N.C., Mt. Airy, N.C., the island of Malta, Ireland, Belgium, Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington, N.C. In 1985 she entered the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and in 1989 graduated with honors with a B.S. in accounting. She also completed the Summer on the Lawn program at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. Joann passed the N.C. CPA exam in 1990 and for over ten years was a tax accountant and adviser, including serving as treasurer of Bristol Books, Inc. and several volunteer and church organizations.
As an active member of the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk at Wrightsville Beach, she belonged to the Presbyterian Women, was a nursery Sunday School teacher, and a teacher for the Mothers' Morning Out program. Joann was an active member of the League of Women Voters and the New Hanover County Democratic Party, and was an election judge for the Wrightsville Beach precinct. She was also an amateur actress and appeared in the films "The Hudsucker Proxy" and "What the Deaf Man Heard." Her lifelong interest in politics and history led her to build outstanding collections of Thomas Jefferson and John F. Kennedy books and memorabilia. During the last 13 years she found great joy in being a loving grandmother to her six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Lewis Yates; her sister, June Holland; and her brother-in-law, George Dawson. She is survived by her husband, Jake, her children Jacob N. Shepherd III and family of Atlanta, Susan Elizabeth Shepherd Sharp and family of Sneads Ferry, N.C., Andrew Lewis Shepherd and family of San Francisco, Joann Yates Shepherd Bristol and family of Wilmington, N.C., Rebecca Joyce Shepherd Opitz and family of Charlottesville, Va., John Hilary Shepherd of Los Angeles and Mary Mildred Christine Shepherd of Wilmington, N.C. She is also survived by her brothers, Franklin Yates of Annapolis, Md., and Paul Yates of Crofton, Md., and her sister Mildred Joyce Dawson of Lynchburg, Va.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 2nd, 2002, at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, N. Lumina at W. Fayetteville Street, Wrightsville Beach, N.C. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, 2 West Fayetteville Street, Wrightsville Beach, N.C. 28480, designated for the "Fifth Sunday Program."
