JONES WINSTON-SALEM -

Jessie Bernice Sink Jones, beloved sister, aunt and friend, died peacefully at Wake Forest University Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC on March 2, 2009 after an extended illness.

She was born of 11 children in Davidson County on October 12, 1911 to the late parents John Andrew Sink and Pearl Lopp Sink, and is preceded in death by her loving husband William Davenport Jones; sisters Nellie Sink Koontz, Margaret Sink Trantham, Cornelia Sink Zimmerman and an infant sister; brothers Edgar Paul Sink, Norman Clyde Sink, Bright Immanuel Sink and David William Sink; and nephew Richard Latham Sink. Surviving are her beloved sister Ruth Sink Corn and husband Clarence Charles Corn, and brother Fred Hale Sink; 21 nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Jessie Jones attended Robbins School and graduated from Lexington High School. She worked for Elk-Dixie Furniture Company and moved to Winston-Salem in 1935 where she worked until retirement for the Veterans Administration. A faithful member of First Baptist Church on 5th Street, Winston-Salem, Jessie was especially devoted to the Lydia Women' s Sunday School Class. In her lively retirement years, she was an enthusiastic volunteer at NC Baptist Hospital. After moving to Independence Village, she enjoyed an active, rich life with beloved friends. "Aunt Jessie" was an elegant, beautiful lady with sparkling eyes and a smile that lit up her surroundings. Her innate modesty and strong sense of decorum prevented her from boasting of being Miss Lexington and the first Miss North Carolina in 1932, but her endearing personality enriched the many lives that she touched. An active walker and gardener, she worked in her yard on Monticello Drive into her 80' s and enjoyed the company of her dear neighbors. In church and around the family piano, her clear alto voice rang out as she harmonized her beloved hymns. To be around Jessie was to experience the simple pleasures of daily life. She enjoyed life to the fullest and lived it with refinement and grace. Her sweet smile and ringing laughter will be deeply missed and always remembered.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 o' clock followed by a memorial service at 2:00 o' clock on March 5, 2009, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 with the Rev. Dr. David Hughes of First Baptist Church on 5th Street officiating.

Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church on 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC or an organization of choice. The family would especially like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Intensive Care Units 4C and 4A of Wake Forest University Medical Center for their commendable kindness and care, as well as the staff at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living.
