Obituary Online notes for Henry Fletcher SHERRILL
Henry Fletcher Sherrill, retired attorney, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014, after an extended illness. Born August 17, 1922, in Statesville, N.C., he was the son of the late Dr. Coite Long Sherrill and Mary McLain Sherrill. He attended Statesville public schools, graduating from high school at Oak Ridge Military Academy in Oak Ridge, N.C. Mr. Sherrill received his undergraduate degree in 1943 from Wake Forest College, then located on the Old Campus in Wake Forest, N.C.
He entered military service during WWII, serving in the U.S. Air Force in the Burma India Theatre. Following his military service, Mr. Sherrill graduated from Duke University Law School in 1947 and moved to Columbia to practice law with his late uncle William Campbell McLain, Sr. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career practicing law in Columbia and is remembered fondly by many attorneys with whom he was associated. He pursued excellence in all things and was a mentor to many young lawyers who learned from Mr. Sherrill what it means to carry out one’s duty to family, friends, and clients.
Mr. Sherrill served for many decades as a director of First Citizens Bank; on the Wake Forest University Law School Board, and on the board of Outward Bound of N.C. He was involved in various clubs and associations in South Carolina and North Carolina.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Coite Long Sherrill, Jr., and brother-in-law Clarence Ninian Steele. He is survived by his wife Isabel Dillon Sherrill. Also surviving are his sister Marianna Sherrill Steele; brother William McLain Sherrill (Eaton Seville Sherrill) of Statesville, N.C.; daughter Betsy Sherrill King and son-in-law Francis Parker King, Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter Julia Sherrill Laws of Winston-Salem, N.C.; granddaughters Mary Fletcher Sherrill King, Sallie Haywood Battle King and Ann McLain Laws.
A Service to the Witness of the Resurrection will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service. 470, Henry Fletcher Sherrill
