United States Senator. He served one term as a US Senator from Idaho from 1948 to 1956. He was a strong supporter of the right wing of the Republican party, and he was also a close associate of Senator Joseph McCarty. In 1954 he was McCarty's chief defender in the debate, which led to McCarthy's censure by the Senate. Herman Welker is best remembered for his relentless fight against communism. He attended the University of Idaho, earning an LL.B. degree in 1929. He ran as a candidate for re-election but lost with less than 39 percent of the vote.
