According to his Death Certificate, James is the son of Allen Whitesell and Ruby (Cheek) Whitesell. Working for General Shoe Corporation and living in Lewisburg, Tennessee, he was 20 years old and single when died on June 12, 1937 at Nashville's Protestant Hospital after having an appendectomy on June 6th. Burial was the next day in Whitesell Cemetery.
