EUGENE MATTOX CALLAWAY, 66, of Rayle, Ga., died Saturday night at his home. A native and lifelong resident of Wilkes County, "Gene," as he was known, was the son of John Allan and Elizabeth Richardson Callaway. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Georgia Poultry Federation, the National Turkey Federation, the Georgia Angus Association and the Georgia Farm Bureau, and was a pioneer and active member of the Callaway Family Association. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a farmer and president of Callaway Farms, Inc. survivors include his widow, Mrs. Avola Whitsell Callaway, Rayle; two sons, Eugene Mattox Callaway, Jr. and Blake Whitesell Callaway, both of Rayle; two daughter-in-law, Myra Dowling Callaway and Kari Hudson Callaway; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Dowling Callaway and Blake Whitesell Callaway, Jr., both of Rayle; and a sister-in-law,Mrs. Adolphus Sanford Callaway, Washington, Ga. Graveside services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Turner Cemetery in Centerville (near Rayle) with Revs. Ryan Seawright, Evelyn McDonald and Grady Mosely officiating. active pallbearers will be Lewis Brown, Dr. Carlton Hearn, Dr. Charles E. "Gene" Pollock, Charles C. Jordan, Pete Kopecky, Frederick Leathers, David N. Derrick and Robert B. Lamar. Honorary pallbearers will be the current and retired employees of Callaway Farms, Inc. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hopkins Funeral Home, Washington. Memorial contributions maybe made to the Washington First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME.

RAYLE, Ga. - Mr. Eugene Mattox Callaway, 66, of 773 Callaway Road, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at his residence.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at Turner Cemetery with the Revs. Rayn Seawright, Elvyn McDonald and Grady Mosely officiating.
Mr. Callaway,a native of Wilkes County, was a farmer and president of Callaway Farms, Inc. He was a member of the Georgia Poultry Federation, the National Turkey Federation, the Georgia Angus Association, the Callaway Family Association and first United Methodist Church of Washington. He was an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Avola Whitesell Callaway; two sons; Eugene Mattox Callaway and Blake Whitesell Callaway,both of Rayle; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Lewis Brown, Robert B. Lamar, Gene Pollock, Charlie Jordan, Frederick Leathers, Pete Kopecky, Steve Brown and David Derrick.
Honorary pallbearers will be employees and retirees of Callaway Farms.
Memorials may be made to First United [Methodist] Church of Washington or the American Caner Society.
Hopkins Funeral Home, Washington, is in charge of arrangements.

Eugene Mattox Callaway

Eugene Mattox Callaway died March 28, 1998, at his home in Rayle, Ga. He was 66.
Mr. Callaway was both a charter and lifetime member and former vice-president of the Callaway Family Association.
A native and lifelong resident of Wilkes Co., Ga., "Gene" as he was known, was the son of John Allan and Elizabeth Richardson Callaway. he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Georgia Poultry Federation, the National Turkey Federation, the Georgia Angus Association and the Georgia Farm Bureau.
Mr. Callaway, who served in the U.S. Air Force and graduated from the University of Georgia, was president of Callaway Farms, Inc.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Avola Whitesell Callaway of Rayle; two sons, Eugene Mattox Callaway, Jr., and Blake Whitesell Callaway, both of Rayle; two daughters-in-law, Myra Dowling Callaway and Kari Hudson Callaway; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Dowling Callaway and Blake Whitesell Callaway, Jr. of Rayle, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Adolphus Sanford (Helen) Callaway of Washington, Ga.
A graveside service was held at Turner Cemetery in Centerville. In addition to active pallbearers, honorary pallbearers were current and retired employees of Callaway Farms, Inc.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Washington, Ga., or to the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Callaway was one of the largest turkey farmers in Georgia, raising 350,000 of his Callaway's Dimpled Darlings at his Washington, Ga. farm through the late 1980's. He also raised hogs and black Angus cattle and was the seventh generation in his family to farm in Wilkes County.
Although Mr. Callaway was no longer in the turkey business, suffering with cancer, his sons are the eighth generation to run the 4,000-acre family farm. His ancestors came to Georgia from Delaware in 1783.
Gene and his wife, Avola, were not only active in the CFA for many years, but played major host and hostess roles at the annual meeting in Athens, Ga. and hosted a cookout on their spread.
