Opal O'Bryant Kerr McCroskey
Opal O'Bryant Kerr McCroskey passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010, after observing her 96th birthday September 3. She was born on a farm near Clever, Mo., the daughter of Joe and Retie (Thomas) Kerr.
Opal was united in marriage to Alden McCroskey on December 27,1934. They were married 57 years before his death September 12,1991. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Donald Kerr; and a sister, Cleo Carter.
She is survived by a sister, Alma Jo Spurgeon, of Naples, Florida; two sons, Allen and his wife Beverly, of Republic, and Sam and his wife Angie, of Willard. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Jana Cornelius, Donna Phillips, Amanda McCroskey, and one grandson, Matt McCroskey and his wife Nanette; three great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Opal was not only a homemaker, she worked side by side with Alden on their dairy farm. She was devoted to caring for Alden for many years during his heart illness, and she undoubtedly extended his life through her total devotion and loving care. Opal was the ultimate southern cook. After milking, and tending her large garden, she found time to prepare a delicious feast each day for her family, and for those who happened to be there helping on the farm.
Opal was a long time member of High Street Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, October 11, 2010, in Meadors Funeral Home in Republic. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, in White Chapel Cemetery, Springfield, with Bill Blakeslee officiating, under the direction of Meadors Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
