On Wednesday, July 19, 1905, the messenger of death came and carried away the spirit of Robert Newton Gambill.
Brother Gambill was born in Bedford County, Tennessee, August 30, 1837, professed Christ in 1850 at Knight's camp ground and joined the M. E. Church, south. He removed to Craighead County, Arkansas in 1850 and united with the church at Shiloh where he lived a consistent member until his death. He was 67 years , 10 months and 12 days old.
Early in his sickness he selected the songs, "Why Do We Mourn Departed Friends" and "One By One We'll All Be Gathered Home" and "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, I'll Be There" to be sung at his funeral service, also the text Revelations 14:13 to be preached from at his funeral.
Brother Gambill's place cannot be filled. He was beliked by all. He was the friend and good advisor of the young folks, a guide and pattern to the older, a counsoler to the sick, and a worker in the church whose light was not under a bushel; one by whom fruit you easily judge the tree, for "By their fruit you shall know them."
Death held no terror for Brother Gambill, for him it was only putting away the old and feeble frame and taking a new; only a journey from from this to a better land. May God bless the bereaved family.
We've heard him oft repeat the story,
Of the Precious Savior's love.
And while he spoke a beam of glory
Rested on him from above.
By and by his angel children
Robed in garments, pure and white,
Bore him safely o'er the river
To the home of saints in light.
Ere long we all will be called over,
And will meet dear father there,
To live in joy with God forever,
Free from toil and Care.
