BARBER, 49, TAKES LIFE IN CLAY TWP.
George Arnold, 49, a Clay Twp. barber, died early Thursday in his home at 52576 Rd. of what St. Joseph County sheriff's deputies described as a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Dr. Edward S. Shelley, coroner, ruled the death a suicide.
Deputies said Arnold, who operated the barber shop in his home, shot himself after his wife, Hazel, left for work about 7 a.m.
His body was found by relatives, deputies said. Arnold had been despondent over financial troubles, authorities related.
He was born in South Bend on Aug. 1, 1911, and spent his lifetime here.
On Nov. 14, 1935, in Valparaiso he married Hazel Washburn, who survives.
Also surviving are a foster daughter, Mrs. Dale Walser of Kansas City, Mo.; and four sisters, Mrs. Hazel Fetters of Mishawaka, Mrs. Bessie Bottorff of South Bend, Mrs. Robert Burkeholder of Whittmore, Mich., and Mrs. Darriel Schall of Phoenix.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Bubb Chapel, Mithawaka, Rev. Robert W. Swank, pastor of the Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, will officiate, and burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park,
