Obituary Online notes for Raymond Albert ARTHUR
Sled-Auto victim dies; funeral Sat.
Raymond Albert Arthur, 9, died at 5 a. m. Thursday in the Union City hospital from injuries received just 12 hours earlier when he let go the bumper of an automobile and coasted head first on his sled into the wheels of another machine.
Raymond, a third grade pupil in the Union City West Side schools, attended Sunday school at the Methodist church. He was born in Greensfork township, Randolph county, October 25, 1930. Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Arthur, 1129 West Oak street; two sisters, Mable Irene and Martha, both at home; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Arthur, of near Spartanburg, and the maternal grandfather, P. A. Brogg, residing near Winchester.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p. m. in the Union City Methodist church, with Rev. Carl Adams officiating. Burial will be made in the Union City cemetery. The body will be returned to the residence from the Fraze funeral home in Union City at 10 a. m. today, where friends may call.
Testimony of Leon Stump, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Stump, West Pearl street, Union City, presented Thursday before Dr. Lowell W. Painter, Randolph county coroner, and Charles Tritt, Union City West Side, chief of police, painted the following picture of events leading to Raymond's death:
Gibson Bickel, West Pearl street, driving east on Pearl stopped and ordered several children on sleds, holding on to his machine to get off. All complied, including Leon Stump, except Raymond Arthur. Just as the Bickel machine was about to pass the auto driven by James White, 19, 325 South State Line street, and headed west, the youth let go of the Bickel car bumper and his sled veered head-on into the front left wheel of the White machine. White, regardless of the snow-covered pavement, had no opportunity to stop or turn his machine, it was believed.
Young Arthur died; never regaining consciousness, of a fractured skull, shattered jaw and other injuries. 470, Raymond Albert Arthur
