Obituary
Dr. Wayne Thompson Moore passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2022 after several years of declining health. He was born in Burlington, July 10, 1928, the son of the late Mattie Thompson Moore and the late Charles F. Moore, Sr.

Dr. Wayne Moore graduated from Burlington High School and Elon College and received a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1950. Following graduation, he served in the U. S. Army in Virginia and Germany. Upon his discharge, Dr. Moore taught in the music department of Elon College and served as organist and choirmaster of the Church of the Holy Comforter. Following a year of music study in Vienna, Austria, Dr. Moore entered Columbia University where he earned the degree, Doctor of Education. Dr. Moore later taught organ at Mississippi Woman’s University and the University of Northern Colorado before joining the music faculty of Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, where he taught for thirty-one years. During his teaching career, Dr. Moore performed many organ recitals in the Southeast. In addition, he played twice at the National Cathedral, Washington, and for a number of years, presented annual recitals in New York, performing at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, and Columbia University. He also contributed many articles to professional journals.

Dr. Moore is survived by his niece, Laurel Moore Bradley (Richard), nephew, Ed Moore (Darlene), and several great nieces.

Dr. Moore was preceded in death by his two brothers, Dr. C. Fletcher Moore, Jr. and Willard G. Moore. His beloved wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Nelms Moore, died in 2004.

The family will have a private graveside service at Pine Hill Cemetery.
