Durham – Mary Susan Hayes Dunlevy, 86 died on December 26, 2020 surrounded by her family after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s Disease at the Forest at Duke Health & Wellness Center. In 1959 she married the love of her life Harvey Risher Dunlevy with whom she spent the next 61 years. For over 40 years Susan taught elementary school children both as a grade schoolteacher then as a reading specialist. For most of her career, Susan taught numerous children how to read at Hillandale Elementary School in Durham.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, and numerous cherished Aunts and Uncles.
She is survived by her husband, Harvey Risher Dunlevy of Durham, her daughter Dr. Jane Risher Dunlevy of Grand Forks, ND, her son James Harvey Dunlevy and his wife Susan Ann Klemm of Charlotte, her sister Jane Hayes Harris and her husband Dr. Edward Flynn Harris of Charlotte, 3 grandchildren Hayes Vaughn Dunlevy, Katherine Joy Dunlevy, and James Kelley Dunlevy of Charlotte, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to being a beloved teacher, wife, mother and grandmother, Susan was an avid gardener growing a variety of vegetables and flowers annually. She was guided by her faith and regularly attended services at Westminster Presbyterian Church and thoroughly enjoyed cooking favorite dishes for the church Supper Club. Susan was also an avid reader of news and literature, an enthusiastic neighborhood walker, and a loyal friend to many. She loved classical music, plays, and performing arts and will be remembered for her warm, kind, eloquent spirit and particularly for her phenomenal cooking that filled her family and friends with joy from special holiday meals to summer backyard gatherings over homemade ice creams.
The family would like to thank the caregivers, staff, nurses, and physicians at the Forest at Duke as well as the nurses and staff at Transitions Hospice who took such kind loving care of Susan and her family. And a special thanks also goes to family friend Bebe Guill who made Susan’s transition from her beloved house to the Forest at Duke one filled with beauty and simple pleasures.
