Michael R. Somers, 66, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Baystate Medical Center.

He was born October 16, 1940 in Greensboro, NC, the son of the late Paul and Mary (Lee) Somers.

Mike was a 1960 graduate of Trade High School and 1977 graduate of Western New England College. He served his country proudly in the US Navy. He started a career as a law officer in 1970 for the Springfield Police Department retiring as Sergeant with 23 years of service. He was also employed as a driver with Peter Pan Bus Lines. Mike was a member of the Springfield Retired Police & Fire Association, Massachusetts Police Association, Springfield American Legion and the "Wednesday Breakfast Club".

Mike thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the ocean, golfing, and spending quality time with his family and buddies.

He is survived by his five children: Pamela Cherry and her husband, Eric of Milton, MA; Kristine Somers Gomes and her husband, Joe of East Longmeadow; Kelli Liu and her husband, Montgomery of Henderson, NV; Scott Somers of Augusta, GA and Paul Candage of Orleans, MA; his eight grandchildren: Nicholas S. Gomes, Kelsey A. Gomes, Isabella Grace Gomes, Jason Cherry, Samuel Liu, Katherine Liu, Scott Somers Jr., and Anthony Somers. He also leaves behind his former spouse, Sheila K. (Isham) Somers; two brothers, Gary and his wife, Rosemary, and Leslie and his wife, Janice; one sister, Sandra Beaulieu and her husband, Gerald of Plantation, FL; and other loving relatives and friends.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his two sisters, Patsy Somers and Geraldine Coppolo.

A funeral service for Michael will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2007 beginning at 9:00 AM from Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 N. Main St., East Longmeadow, with a funeral service beginning at 10:00 AM at South Congregational Church, 45 Maple St., Springfield.

Burial will follow with military honors at Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield. Calling hours will be Friday, July 27th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mike's name to the New England Organ Bank, One Gateway Center, Suite 202, 300 Washington St., Newton, MA 02458.

Mike was a nineteen year liver transplant recipient and three year kidney transplant recipient. His family will always be grateful to the anonymous Michigan liver donor and living kidney donor for allowing them new life with their father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be missed. Please consider being an organ donor.
