Obituary & Services

Camilla Isley, 87, of Burlington, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 23, 2022.

Camilla was the 6th of 7 children born to Joseph and Vita Isley of Alamance County. Passionate about education, reading, art, family, friends, and her Christian faith, Camilla was an inspiration to all who knew her. Earning a Bachelor’s degree in English from High Point College in 1957 and a Master’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1966, Camilla embarked on a long career as a teacher of English and reading in the Burlington school system. She retired from Broadview Middle School after 33 years of service. Always active in her school, church, and community, retirement gave her the opportunity to enjoy many of her favorite pastimes. She was an avid reader and member of book clubs and Bible studies. Blessed with a steady hand and an eye for color and beauty, Camilla was a talented artist who loved to paint. She enjoyed traveling with friends and family, including trips all across her home state, frequent visits to Colorado and the west, and notable excursions to the Hawaiian islands, the Caribbean, Alaska, Canada, and England. Camilla was physically active, energetic, and enjoyed exercise classes and taking long walks with friends. She loved to dance too, including ballroom, square and line dancing, and dance aerobics.

A lifelong member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, Camilla felt a call to Christian missions. She answered that call through local Christian service and by living her faith openly as an example to others. She served in a variety of leadership roles at Mt. Hermon, including Sunday and Bible school teacher, lay leader, member of the church Board of Trustees, and UMC Conference delegate. She was also a long-time, active member and president of the United Methodist Women. Camilla firmly believed in helping others. For many years, she delivered food to those in need as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Through her membership in the Burlington Women’s Club, she volunteered and donated to the club’s thrift shop, whose mission includes community outreach and support.
Camilla was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt, and friend who loved genuinely and unconditionally. Armed with her faith, commitment to health, and the love of her family and friends, Camilla bravely fought and won two battles against cancer—thriving for over 15 years. More recently, Camilla confronted illness again, knowing this time it would be her last. Yet she remained courageous—greeting each daily challenge with her sweet smile and her signature attributes of grace, dignity, gratitude, positivity, beauty, and humor.

Camilla was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Aubren Isley and Danny Isley; and sisters, Gilberta Morene and Nellie Andrews.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Alvin Isley of the home; son, Mark Isley of Denver, CO; sister, Joretta Spurlock of Maumee, OH; brother, Curtis Isley (Diane) of Graham; and many other adoring friends and family members who will miss her, but who take comfort knowing that her loving memory and shining spirit will live on.

Camilla’s family is particularly grateful to the caregivers and AuthoraCare staff for their loving care and dedicated service.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 PM on Saturday, October 1, 2022, in the sanctuary of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, 4178 Mt. Hermon Rock Creek Road, Graham, NC. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM. Weather permitting, the committal service will be held in the church cemetery immediately following the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Hermon UMC, PO Box 1060, Graham, NC 27253; AuthoraCare Collective, 914 Chapel Hill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215; or Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, PO Box 32141, New York, NY 10087-2141. 261, Mrs Mary Camilla Isley
