PROVES FATAL - Wounds Sustained by Henry Poffenbarger Cause His Death - Was Accidentally Shot by Roy
Featherstone on August 8, 1927 - Was a Pioneer Resident of Wayne Township and a Highly Respected Citizen.......
The sufferings of Henry B. Poffenbarger, 74 years of age, who was accidentally shot while gathering black berries
in the Woodbury woods in the afternoon of August 8, 1927, came to an end at midnight last night when his spirit
took its flight to its immortal home. While it was the hope of the entire community that he might recover and be
spared a few more years, it was known to his close friends from the first that, because of his age, he could not
long survive. Day by day he grew weaker and at times his suffering was intense. His eyes especially, from both
of which the sight was entirely gone, gave him much pain and on last Monday afternoon, it was found necessary
to remove the right eye. From the operation, he failed to recover.
Following the accident, he was taken to the Union City Hospital, where he was given the best care and attention
that could be obtained. In fact, the physicians in charge and the hospital nurses deserve the highest commendation for their unselfish service, watchful care and untiring efforts to relieve his suffering and if possible, save his life.
Mr. Poffenbarger was the son of Jared and Rachel Poffenbarger and was born at Woodington, Ohio, January 26,
1853. When three years of age, he removed with his parents to the community locating two miles Southwest of this city (Union City), where he has since made his home. He obtained his education in old District No. 4 school
and on reaching young manhood learned the carpenter trade, which honorable occupation he followed through life. He was an expert workman and was especially skilled in inside finishing as many residents in Union City and vicinity can testify.
On May 22, 1879, Mr. Poffenbarger was married to Miss Tussa Welch. To this marriage two sons were born, one of whom died in infancy. This companion died March 12, 1885 and on November 27, 1890, Mr. Poffenbarger was married to Miss Cordelia Bennett, who survives him. To this union one son and one daughter were born.
Mr. Poffenbarger was a man well informed in current history and literature. He was an indefatigable reader and it can be said of him that he read only the best books and periodicals that he could obtain. The preseent day trashy
fiction did not appeal to him, but he was fond of the works of standard authors. He was especially fond of good
poetry and on finding a poem in a magazine or newspaper which struck his fancy, he would cut it out and file it
away. He followed this practice through life until he had obtained quite a large collection, which he treasured and
preserved with watchful care. Often he would take down the box in which this collection was contained and reread many of the poems, which to him were priceless. Many of these he could repeat from memory and often did so with evident satisfaction to himself and others.
Besides the widow, Mr. Poffenbarger is survived by two sons, Frank of Muncie, Indiana and Leland K. (census
records show his middle initial as S.) of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. Rosa Tipple of this city, one brother,
4 Albert E. Poffenbarger of this city and five grandchildren. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family, who during the past three weeks have passed through a trying ordeal such as few families are even called upon to undergo.
The remains may be viewed at the new Faze Funeral Home this afternoon after 3 o-clock. The funeral will be
held in the Christian Church Friday afternoon at 2 o-clock conducted by Rev. John Watson, assisted by Rev. A. L.
Ward. Interment in City Cemetery. 470, Henry B Poffenbarger
