CHIEF MASTER SERGANT, Curtis J. Ring, 84, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2016.
Curtis was born on July 14, 1931, in Surry County, NC to the late Owen and Ruby Ring. He attended Gibsonville School and was a graduate of Allen Hancock College, Santa Barbara, CA. Curtis served in the US Air Force for 27 years before retiring. He spent the next 18 years as Executive Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the North Carolina Credit Union League. Upon his retirement from the NCCUL, he founded Ringwood Acres Boer Goats where he bred, raised, sold and showed South African Boer Goats.
Not every person celebrates two birthdays per year... but Curtis certainly did! His parents said he was born on July 16th, however his birth certificate states he was born on July 14th, so each year Curtis proudly celebrated his birthday twice. He didn't look too bad for a man who was looking forward to celebrating his 170th birthday this July!
A natural leader, he was a member of many community and professional organizations that are too many to list. A few were very close to his heart which include being an Ordained Elder and Lifetime Member of Bethel Presbyterian Church; Summit Credit Union Board of Directors; Founder of the North Carolina Credit Union Foundation; North Carolina 6th Congressional District Military Service Academy Selection Board for 30 years, of which he was Chairman for 24 years; NC Meat Goat Association Board of Directors; McLeansville Wildlife Club; Don W. Michael Wildlife Club Foundation Board of Directors; Greensboro Kiwanis Club; Chamber of Commerce; Toastmasters International; 32nd Degree Master Mason and member of the Tabasco Lodge #271, Gibsonville, NC as well as a member of the Scottish Rites and York Rites, Greensboro, NC.
In 2010 Governor Beverly Perdue bestowed The Order of the Long Leaf Pine upon Curtis.
Known for being larger than life and loving people he always had a smile on his face, was very punctual and gave the best hugs. He was a positive thinker whose glass was always half full and never half empty. He made a meaningful difference in everything he touched and in the lives of all who were lucky and blessed enough to have known him. His love of family and God were evident in his daily life. He enjoyed family, friends and especially holiday gatherings. Curtis was known for hosting an annual Thanksgiving Pig Pickin' for family and friends where he cooked the best smoked pork barbeque and crafted his own special BBQ Sauce. He often reminded those around him that "Every day is a holiday and every meal is a banquet" so enjoy life to the fullest. At the end of a meeting or event Curtis would often quip "Have we done what we came here to do?" To that end we reply: "Well done our faithful servant, friend and father Curtis Jay Ring!"
Curtis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Blanche Greeson Ring to whom he was married for 63 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and brother Phil Ring.
The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Bradley Sherrill, Oncologist and Dr. Jimmy Granfortuna, Hematologist and their staffs for the care shown to Curtis.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 2nd from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service, 1118 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC.
Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, 2016, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 300 Knox Road, McLeansville, NC. Viewing will be available at 2:15 p.m. prior to the service. Military and Masonic Interment will follow immediately afterwards in the Bethel Church cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow the interment in the Bethel Church Fellowship Hall.
