Mr. Grady Jay Shepherd, Jr., 90, of Memory Care, Twin Lakes Community, died September 29, 2010. He was born in Greensboro, NC on September 19, 1920 to the late Clea Wagoner Shepherd and Grady Jay Shepherd.
He graduated from Greensboro Senior High School and Lenoir-Rhyne College. At Lenoir-Rhyne, Jay was a member of the Varsity basketball and tennis teams. He was named to the Who's Who in Universities and Colleges and was the North Carolina Intercollegiate Singles and Doubles Tennis Champion, 1942 and 1943.
He entered Midshipman school at Northwestern University in Chicago in July 1943. Upon graduation, he was commissioned an Ensign/Full Lieutenant and assigned by the United States Navy to the Amphibious Force in the Atlantic. He participated in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy/Omaha Beach. Following his European tour of duty he was reassigned to the Philippines.
In 1945, he relocated to Catawba County where he was a hosiery executive and was an active member of Beth Eden Lutheran Church. Jay was a strong adversary and leader in the development of junior tennis at the local and regional levels for many years.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents and Evelyn Shepherd Apple of Burlington, NC.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Catherine Richters Shepherd and three daughters, Anne Shepherd Yancey (John) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Susan Shepherd Skeen (Tom) of Elon, NC and Leigh Shepherd French (Jim) of Oakwood, Ohio. Grandchildren include John R. Yancey (McCall) of Nashville, Tennessee, Catherine Yancey Brookes (Kevin) of Charleston, SC, Brooke Skeen Caraher (Joe) of Greensboro, NC, Jay Hunter Skeen of Burlington, Sara, Hanna, Tripp and Joseph French of Oakwood, Ohio. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren and a sister, Hildan Shepherd Jacobs of Greensboro. 470, Mr. Grady Jay Shepherd, Jr.
