Obituary Online notes for Dr. Earl Wilson WATTS Jr.
Dr. E. Wilson Watts, Jr., MD, 80, of Roanoke, passed away unexpectedly on January 14, 2011.

He was born and raised in Rockbridge County and attended Bridgewater College. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1955 and completed a medical residency at Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va. After serving in the United States Army as a Medical Officer, he practiced as a General Practitioner in Crewe, Va. for five years. He moved to Roanoke in 1962 to become an Emergency Physician at the old Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was an active member of Lewis Gale Clinic for over 44 years serving as Attending Physician in both the Emergency and Occupational Medicine Departments.

He was married to his beloved wife, Barbara McKinney Watts for 52 years until her death in 2006.

He has been an active member of Second Presbyterian Church throughout his life and since retirement he has volunteered diligently on the Board of the Historical Society of Western Virginia. He was very generous to his family and community. Wilson was an avid gardener and worked tirelessly in his yard. As an art enthusiast he enjoyed painting, wood carving and studying artwork as he traveled. Our family was fortunate to travel together to the British Isles in July of 2010 in celebration of Wilson's 80th birthday. This trip provided memories that we will cherish even more so with his passing.

He is predeceased by his parents, Earl Wilson and Quaye Watts, sister, Maxine Peschel, sister-in-law, Gayle McKinney and wife Barbara McKinney Watts.

He is survived by three sons and their wives, Mark and Debbie Watts, Blake and Rebecca Watts, Alan and Carolyn Watts; seven Watts grandchildren, Mary Page, Ann Leigh, Emma, Colin, Julia, Alan, Lauren; a nephew and his wife, Bruce and Cathy Peschel; a niece, Carol Peschel; brother -in -law, John McKinney; sister-in law, Gilda McCollum and her husband Jay. He is also survived by a dear companion, Ann (Tanky) Stephenson.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. George C. Anderson, the Rev. Dr. William R. Klein, and Gerald Carter CLP at Second Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall after the service. A private inturnment will be held at the columbarium prior to the service. The family will also host a visitation at his son Mark's home on Monday January 17, 2011 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be given to the Historical Society of Western Va., PO Box 1904, Roanoke, Va., 24008.
